US vs. UK Friday Night Smackdown!

Postby Manplow » Tue May 08, 2007 8:03 pm

Thought of this one the other day.

Name five bands/musicians from the US that are still currently touring or releasing records that are your current favorite.

Name five bands/musicians from the UK that are still currently touring or releasing records that are your current favorite.

Name five bands/musicians from the US that are no longer together that are you favorite (could be dead, broke-up, doesn't matter, any era).

Name five bands/musicians from the UK that are no longer together that are you favorite (could be dead, broke-up, doesn't matter, any era).

US (present) - Black Lips, Animal Collective, Dead Meadow, Lilys, The King Khan & BBQ Show

UK (present) - British Sea Power, Broadcast, Ladytron, Supergrass, Spiritualized

US (past) - Buddy Holly, Leonard Cohen, The Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Skeeter Davis

Then we sit on our thumbs and spin?

What's the point of any topic on a forum anyway? See what kind of cross-section of humanity likes to waste their break time on music message boards?

Honestly.

Whoops, I forgot Leonard is Canadian. Well, for purposes of discussion we'll count Canada as part of North America and The Republic of Ireland as part of the British Isles.

I guess I'd have to retract him anyway, since apparently he released an album in 2001, although I had to look that one up. I guess I'll go with Blondie. Maybe Television... On second thought definitely Sam Cooke.

i'm not being ironic or funny

Perhaps discussion ensues? Maybe related to in or around what kind of music people prefer as indicated by the "Other Music"category title? Kind of in the same vein as "desert island discs/dicks(sic)."

Right then

US together: LCD Soundsystem, Sufjan Stevens, Asobi Seksu, Akron/Family, Modest Mouse

UK Together: BSP, Ladytron, Super Furry Animals, Belle & Sebastian, Radiohead

US Split: (To be honest, really struggling in this category. I don't really have a great affection for any defunct American bands.) Grandaddy, At The Drive In, Neutral Milk Hotel, Talking Heads, The Beach Boys

UK Split: Led Zeppelin, Joy Division, The Stone Roses, Pink Floyd, David Bowie

I was pretty impressed with the Super Furry Animals last year in Chicago. I'm not really familiar with a lot of their stuff though but I guess a lot of it is sung in Welsh or something? Already way over my head but what I've heard was really good. I especially like the "Receptacle for the Respectable" song.

funnily enough I was going to rant on and say music is far better/more interesting/more creative/daring your side of the pond at the moment. I also think whats happening in Canada has finally settled down and is interesting (I always thought it was all a bit forced/government sponsored before, but if Mahogany is owt to go by, oh wait, they might be Yanks)

But;
UK/Eire: BSP/Brakes. 65daysfstatic, SFA/Guff Rhys, Julian Cope/Thighpaulsandra, Robyn Hitchcock, Vashti Bunyan/James Yorkston..

US/Colonies: Animal Collective, CoCoRosie, White Hills, Joanna Newsome/all the nu-alt folk LPs I have, Comets on Fire/Howlin Rain/Akron-Family, Secretly Canadian label (all artists), Isota Records (all artists) Kelley Stoltz, Mahogany, Lansing Dreiden.

Oldies UK/Eire: Bunnymen, New Order, The Fall, John Cale, Eno/Roxy, all that late 70s art school stuff; XTC/Wire/Doctors of Madness-Richard Strange/MagazineI Ludus/Maximum Joy. And Basil Kirchin.
Oldies US/Colonies: GBV, Velvets, Garage, Jerry Lee, Chuck Berry, Talking Heads, Funkaldelic/Clinton, Beefheart, Jonathan Richman, Steve Reich.

AND (Northern) Europe is kick-ass (pardon my Americanism) right now...
Appie Kim, Hospital Bombers, Anssi 8000, Harmwierda, Adept, About, The Morr Music Label, The Nasoni Records Label, Vox Von Braun, THe Sugarettes, Jackson and his Computer Band, the Wot Nxt Label, Jason Roberts, Daniel Agust.

Europa oldies: All of Krautrock, Magma, Abba, German porn soundtracks, East German pop
